It sounds like the deal that would have sent Todd Helton to the Red Sox is now indefinitely on hold. The Red Sox were offering up Mike Lowell and Julian Tavarez while the Rockies were more interested in prospects like Dave Hansen. I have to give the Rockies credit for sticking to their guns here because the idea of getting rid of that salary is pretty tempting. The problem I had is, Todd Helton had a rough season last year and his stock might be lower then it’s ever been. I wouldn’t mind seeing what he can do and maybe get a little more value for him.
And what’s in store for Todd Helton in 2007? According to PECOTA, you should expect a .303/.396/.501 line. I can live with that considering you also get above average defense at first base. His 75 percentile puts him at .315/.410/.577. That’d be even prettier.
Hello, my name is Phil Duncan, and like my counterpart who’s writing about the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, I have one of the easiest jobs in the Baseball Historians network. I’ll be covering the Rockies for the network and not only have the Rockies only been around for fourteen years, but the teams playoff record is pretty slim. 1995 was the last (and only) time the Rockies have made the postseason and the team hasn’t finished above fourth place since 1997. Remember the Don Baylor years? I have fond memories of those days. Sigh.
So, in addition to covering the current day Rockies, I’ll be trying to come up with ways to present to you the team’s rich history. I’ll probably start with season by season retrospectives, but we’ll see what the old brain comes with as far as ideas. I might do a Todd Helton retro since it looks like his days with the Rockies are numbered.
Jeff Francis is my favorite Rockie so he’ll get a little bit of extra attention. The left hander put together a decent season last year, as far pitchers in Colorado can expect to have.
So I hope you’ll stop by on occasion to check out the site. I’m looking forward to writing about my favorite team and I hope you make the Register a regular stop, especially if your a Rockies’ fan.
