As the cliche goes, the Padres could not hit the broadside of a barn against the Cubs Wednesday night. They could not put up a single run in the 4-0 loss and managed just a measly six hits.
The Cubs had no such trouble, pounding out 13 hits, 11 coming off starter Greg Maddux. Maddux was roughed up in 4.1 inning, giving up four runs off the 11 hits. He only struck out one Cub hitter.
Ryan Dempster on the other hand, found no such difficulty in sitting down the Padres lineup. He went a solid 8.1 innings allowing just the six hits, three to Brian Giles, and struck out a season high 12. He notched his fifth win of the year.
Dempster received strong support on offense. Aramis Ramirez rapped out three hits. Derrek Lee had two RBI’s and two hits in the winning cause. Ronny Cedeno and Alfonso Soriano also had two hits each.
Kerry Wood earned his eighth save of the year.
