Matt Holliday Profile and the State of the Rockies

by @ 9:31 am. Filed under 2007 Rockies

It’s been almost three weeks and it doesn’t look like I missed much.  Baseball Historians had a system wide outage that prevented me from posting hence the abscence.  I’m sorry I haven’t been around and ironically, when I left, the Rockies were in last place.  Now that I’m back up and writing, the Rockies are in, er, last place.  They’re 7 1/2 games back of the fourth place Diamondbacks and they’re well behind the first place Dodgers.

Todd Helton has been a man afire.  It looks like his 40 homerun seasons are long gone but that doesn’t stop him from being productive.  He’s hitting .374 and he has an astronomical .488 on base percentage.  And after a two year abscence, Helton is back up in the four digit OPS category.  At the current pace, he’ll strike out fewer times then in any given season in his career and his career best 127 walks may be in jeopardy too.

And then there’s Matt Holliday, who is an early season MVP candidate even though I don’t expect many votes because the Rockies are in last place.  He also has a four digit OPS and he leads the team in just about everything except batting average.  He was also recently profiled by Baseball Prospectus, so if you want to see where Holliday comes from, be sure to check out this well written column.

The Rockies try to even up their series with the Diamondbacks tonight.  Aaron Cook has been fairly solid for the Rockies this year but he has a tall task as he takes on Brandon Webb.  Go Rockies, and I’m glad to be back.
